Who are you?
I'm Kayleigh! I live in Brooklyn, commute to Manhattan, play polo, and generally don't go out unless I wanna bike there.
How many winters have you been biking?
Five. They seem to be getting milder? Maybe I'm just getting more used to it.
Why do you ride your bike in the winter?
Same reasons I ride in the summer! It takes just about as long as the subway from where I live and is 9301742 times more enjoyable.
What's the dumbest question or comment you've received about winter biking?
"Isn't it cold?! Do you wear gloves?" (Yes and yes.) Some non-bikers truly don't believe me when I say I prefer it to summer riding, but come on! Less sweat, less pedestrians, I look great in scarves...
Have any crazy things happened to you while riding in the winter?
I was riding behind someone who got cut off on a particularly icy night and crash into the dude's trunk -- she was physically fine but we made him give her all the money in his wallet. All singles... he must have been heading to Pumps. I then got food poisoning from a frozen pizza. Unrelated to biking I guess but crazyterrible.
What's your most useful piece of equipment?
A knitted wool funnel scarf from my friend Tracy -- Buffalo kids should know about warm accessories! I've worn it every winter and it keeps me toasty without overheating. Actually, I pretty much just need to wear that with a windbreaker over a layer of CuddleDuds and I'm good to go.
Any final words?
If you don't have friends who surprise you with a thermos of hot toddies, be that friend. And wear a helmet.
